Fun Fact: Won the HHC Best New Haunted Attraction of the Year Award in 2012

For 9 seasons, the crew at Abandoned Haunted House Complex in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, has been filling the brisk Wisconsin October night air with screams, shrieks, and of course, the melodious sound of chainsaws. Now, some may think that this attraction is “too far” from Chicago, but believe it or not, it’s only right over the border, only 68 miles from Chicago, and worth every penny in tolls & gas. This is not a one-and-done type of attraction, but rather an entire night out, an overall destination of Halloween fun.

Each year, the crew behind abandoned sets out to change, revamp, and recreate the nightmares housed within their heads and put all of those horror’s into the show making it bigger and better. Working tirelessly in the off-season, their hard work always shows. As previously mentioned, for us at HHC, we were sidelined in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so we were anxiously waiting to see what changes were made. Well, let’s just say, they had been VERY busy!

We began our evening with a trip through the corn as we entered “Stalker”. This attraction opened back in 2016 and well, it just keeps getting bigger, badder, and darker!  Here, guests take a walk under the stars. For us, the evening’s forecast was rain. Now normally you would think this would deter from the experience, but the rain and puddles actually ENHANCED the feeling of being outside, exposed, and at the mercy of the elements.

Very few attractions in the Chicagoland area have corn mazes, so this is always something we look forward to. We weaved our way throughout the corn and entered numerous scenes that were there to take us off our path.  Scenes like a trip through the corn silo, the camper, the graveyard, and the junkyard. But the MOST memorable scene was that of the Haunted House dark ride. As if it was straight out of an amusement park, we set off on our journey within the abandoned ride. Complete with broken down buggies and a track running throughout the entire building, we didn’t want to leave! This is probably one of the best side-shows we have experienced! (AND not to mention that it is an attraction inside an attraction. This is the beginning of some haunted house-inception discussion! Groundbreaking!)

The actors within Stalker were everywhere and were not letting the rain slow them.  They were hungry and ready to attack from up above, within the corn, deep in a corner, or on the ground. You aren’t safe from any direction! Often, you’ll hear an actor rustling through the corn, but this crew attacks quickly and very quietly, leaving your eyes to wander about, and making your skin crawl with anticipation. You truly never know when and where the next attack is going to come from!

Next, we made our way to their two indoor attractions, “Hysteria” & “Ambush”. Get ready for an overload of your senses, because inside these walls, its as if it’s straight out of a movie. The detail within these attractions is abundant! Floor to ceiling scenes, a custom-made soundtrack, perfectly projected lighting, and patrons experiencing a multitude of stairs and ramps within, you will never feel settled or safe.

Some of our favorite scenes throughout are the time-warp entrance, the jungle, the clown funhouse, the prison cells, and of course, a quick trip through the gentleman’s club with Cookie! However, the one that stops us in our tracks is the castle. Watching a scene happen above you and then experiencing the scene you were just in from a different vantage point, you are fully immersed in this interactive experience. Buy some weaponry or play in the snow, this scene is a 360 experience.

Scattered throughout this terrifying web of bad dreams is an army of actors hiding in the corners, behind walls, and even above you! With the most precise patience and skill, they lurk waiting for the opportune moment to strike. Here its all about immersion, the witty banter is top notch and every actor within will always have a clever response, don’t believe us, talk to the prison mates!

Monsters of Note: Itchy, Scratchy, Bacon, Lizzy Crow, and Cookie

The Bottom Line: Overall, Abandoned Haunted House Complex has shown that their hunger grows each year.  With the extraordinary number of changes made in the off-season, each time you step foot on the property, be ready for what feels like a whole new show! The crew at Abandoned have once again left no corner empty and are always ensuring that patrons are set out to be scared and have that “wow factor” that requires you to spread the good news to friends. If you’re looking for an entire evening of entertainment and screams, look no further than Abandoned!
