Fun Fact: Started as home haunters, and also produce masks, costumes, and more for attractions around the country!

We have a special place in our hearts for haunters that start as home haunters. Maybe it is because we know they have a deep-rooted passion for the holiday and make it their mission to fan the fire within others as well. We have been honored to follow the journey of the Hill Family from their first steps into the “commercial” world of haunting to where they are now: a fully developed haunted attraction with a year-round mask and costume shop that produces products for attractions around the country – including to Universal Studios! How can you not love a story like that?

Now in their 2nd year at their new permanent location in Crown Point, IN, the Haunted Hills Hospital crew has been settling in nicely. The first change we noticed for 2022, was the parking location. While they have a huge chunk of land, they were aware that after it rained (like it does in October), the mud can cause some headaches for their guests. So, they assembled a bus transportation system so guests can park at the nearby waterpark and be shuttled over in comfort.

Stepping into the midway, the second change was the expansion of vendors and food offerings. While guests are getting their favorite vittles, Haunted Hills Hospital actors and actresses are careful to sneak up on unsuspecting patrons! (Which is always great for a jump and a laugh!) New for 2022: The Square, which is an addition to the Midway. Here, guests can nosh on some snacks, watch classic horror movies, throw axes, shoot arrows, and participate in some other fun classic carnival games! (Although Vincent Price was on the evening we were there, we didn’t have enough time to stay and play.)

As guests move deeper into the attraction, they first progress is into the Hills Hollow: Sanctum Scarezone. More aggressive and less “safe” than the other areas, doctors, nurses, patients, and your local crazies run amok enjoying the rockshow music and dancing around! While you are jamming out to the tunes, make sure you look up for the occasional fire ball that gets emitted!

For 2022, Haunted Hills Hospital is producing three attractions. Our first adventure was into the new Fear Lab Haunt Experience. Before beginning, our vision was blocked by special goggles, and our bodies were placed in harms’ way. Experiencing various tests guests are tested to see just how much they can take before the fear takes over! Is it maggots, spiders, maybe snakes?! With your sense of sight removed, you never know!

Their section attraction is the Sickbilly Side Show. Instead of a circus-themed show, this was actually a glimpse into the downtime of the stars of the big top. Peering into their “off-duty” time, guests get to see what a clown’s life is like “off-stage.” The games are broken down, and not all the acts are ready for the stage, as these clowns are ready to get their revenge -on us!

Finally, and for their first time inside their permanent building, we had the chance to enter the new and improved Haunted Hills Hospital Haunted House. As the plot goes, the evil Truman Corporation has some terrible secrets and we are about to become their next victim, er… patient. As we entered, we learned about our new way of life and were welcomed. We got to experience the living areas and kitchen, and given a taste of what is to come.

Of course, what would a hospital be without treatment? Starting this section of the attraction, guests are asked to take their medicines. (We had to oblige!) We then continued on to experience our regularly-scheduled brainwashing, shock therapy, water therapy, and even some gardening! The sickness is definitely becoming real and thankfully, we found some friends who help us into the third and final section: the Escape.

Helping us find a way out, we exited out of the institution into an outdoor maze, twisting and turning with creatures at every turn. Our exit even included an attempted trip on the bus with patients that convinced us that we are all sane. (Right?) Somehow, dodging the final chainsaw, we made it out alive! Phew!

Monsters of Note: Nurse Ratchet, Reaper, the various monsters of the scarezone, and Jax

The Bottom Line: Haunted Hills Hospital continues to impress and progress into becoming an activity that you and your friends can enjoy for the whole night! Between food, fun, games, and THREE haunted attractions, this is one of the most well-rounded offerings that must be on your Halloween planner this (and every) season!
